Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
